Mt. Elbrus is a stunning volcanic peak located in the Caucasus Mountains of Russia and at 18,510' it is Europe's, as well as Russia's, highest peak. Mount Elbrus dominates the Central Caucasus like a twin-peaked icy giant. A circular lava massif, it has a diameter of 18 kilometres and more than 70 large and small glaciers flow from its slopes. The entire mountain is covered by an immense sheet of ice that takes up 145 square kilometres and in some places is 400 meters thick.
Mt. Elbrus is one of the 7 summits, the highest mountain of the European continent with 5642 m (18,510 ft). Mt.Elbrus is situated between the Black and the Caspian Sea on the territory of the Russian Federation, only 20 km from the Georgian border. Mount Elbrus is a dormant volcano. The last explosion occurred about 2000 years ago. Situated in the rugged Great Caucasus mountains, this mountain is actually a dormant volcano. It has two summits, west and east, with a gentle saddle in between them. The two summits of Elbrus are in fact two craters of the volcano. Everywhere on its slopes, you can see the debris of solidified lava.
