A road trip to Srinagar is going to be perfect. You can either hire a private car or even self-drive to the summer capital of Kashmir. The road conditions are fantastic and suitable for an adventure-filled drive. And the route is so scenic that you will enjoy looking at the magnificent vistas while travelling to Srinagar. The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway is the northernmost segment of NH 44 (formerly NH 1A ). It runs from Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley southward to the city of Jammu. It is one of the two road links, the other being the Mughal Road, that connects the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India. The traffic on the highway is controlled by two control rooms, one in Srinagar and the other in Jammu. The highway starts from Lal Chowk, Srinagar and passes through Pulwama district, Anantnag district, Kulgam district, Ramban district, and Udhampur district & ends in Jammu city. In the mountains, highway is often closed during winters due to heavy snowfall, landslides & avalanches.
You can take a bus service if it is available from your base destination. There are bus services to Srinagar from cities like Delhi and Chandigarh, as well as Jammu and Leh. There’s a relatively new highway between Srinagar and Jammu and this has reduced travel time significantly. However, do note that the buses are often not in good condition and subsequently, your trip might not be very comfortable. There is a J&K SRTC bus station where you will be able to board your bus. Buses tend to arrive early morning or late at night and this is something you will have to keep in mind before finalizing your travel plans. Direct buses from Delhi are also available but bear in mind that these take nearly an entire day to reach Srinagar.
The nearest railway stations are the Jammu Tawi (271 km from Srinagar) and the Udhampur Railway Station (200 km from Srinagar). The stations are well-connected to all the major cities of the country. Private cabs and State Government buses can be boarded from the stations to reach Srinagar.

Airlines such as IndiGo, Spicejet, Go Air and Air India fly to Srinagar regularly. From the airport, there are prepaid taxis to get into the city. The airport is placed just 15 km away from the center of the city. Srinagar Airport has strict security measures and is itself 1.2km behind a security barrier. Arriving here before time is a good idea because there are several long queues for luggage and body screening. It’s best to leave much before time.
